How old school is high school?

So now that we have officially entered the 21st century with our blogging, let's talk about all the cool gadgets that exist now. Cell phones have the internet, thousands of songs can be saved on a teeny tiny little iPod, oh and sure, why not be able to have a face-to-face conversation with your brother/sister/friend that is across the country/globe. There is so much crazy technology out there now, but do you get to use it while you are at school? I know that I don't use much (and yes, graphing calculators count as technology!), but I'm curious about your other classes. Do you're other classes use all this fancy-schmancy technology? Do you wish that your teachers used more technology? Would it make school more interesting and relevant for you?

**P.S.  You will probably need to post a little more than 2 sentences this time....like maybe even a whole paragraph (GASP!). I want this to be like a conversation, and spark some inspirational thoughts!

  1. I typed up a song that I wrote as my homework for one of my classes, and the teacher made me handwrite it during class before I could turn it in, and make an additional handwritten copy for her to keep, which is RIDICULOUS. 1) She wasn't an English teacher and 2) I could have just ran off another copy that was typed. Times have changed. The English teachers here at Ravenwood met with the middle schools and told them to stop teaching cursive because there's no need for it, because everything is going to be typed anyways.

The biggest jump for technology is occurring in the elementary and middle school environment for sure. Los niƱos are learning how to use a computer sooner than ever before, but it's necessary. Imagine how illiterate a 6th grader would feel if the teacher assigned a homework assignment on 'Word' and the student didn't know how to work it.

At Ravenwood, the technology doesn't go too far beyond projectors and COWS. It would be nice if we incorporated more technology but why would WCS fund it? What more technology could we be using in class anyway? The next step is getting every child a laptop. Just wait...

  2. Technology is a benifit to society. With the new stuff coming out technology could benifit school a lot, if only we took advantage of it. Personally, I don't use much technology in school besides calculators and mainly typing on computers. I would like it if we did use more technology, I believe it would help us learn better and more efficiantly. I would probably be able to pay more attention and be more interested in the "up-to-date" stuff that I can learn how to use, rather than old, boring things. More technology in school could be a great advantage. :)

  3. My teachers don't really use that much technology besides the projector. I think its cool to work new technology but it doesn't really make school interesting. New technology is cool at first but after awhile it gets old. Just like the calculator I dont see it as cool technology just something I have to use for math class.

  4. I am the first to post!!!!!!!(YEA).Although we use calculators as a form of technology. In my other classes, we go to the computer lab, to do research. My teachers also make powerpoints or they will play music to help us get inspired(English class).I think that teachers should let students use lap tops during school.I think teachers should think of more creative ways to get students involved and they could do that by using technology in a interesting way.I think if teachers used technology in a more creative way, classes might be more interesting (Shocking, no) . By classes being more interesting, in turn the class would become more relevant to me( GASP).I ultimately, think student will excel with the more creative use of technology.

  5. Technology or not, school is school. We're going to learn someway or the other. Me, personally, doesn't really care if we do not use technology. My only problem is that Hish School is surrposed to prepare students for the "real world" , so why aren't we useing all this technology?! That's what i don't understand. When we join the workfroce alot of technology is used! High School need to use technology as in a way to prepare us students for what will be expected in the "real world". Not no little calculators with black and white games on it that's surrposed to grab our attention.

  6. My teachers don't really use technology any differently from others. They mostly use their computers, projectors, slide shows... The simple stuff. I feel like some teachers prefer when we use technology to do things, though. Like, English teachers are wanting things turned in on a piece of paper that's typed instead of handwritten, and homework is being done a lot more online than anything else. I feel as though some teachers still live in that time where technology isn't used much in the classroom and it's kinda frustrating because of it. I've gotten used to the way each teacher and classroom works, so it's not much of a hassle for me when it happens that one teacher prefers it, and another doesn't. It's just a fact of life. And it also depends upon how old your teacher is. I've noticed the younger teachers here at RHS are more likely to incorporate technology than are the ones who have been teachers for 8 years or more.
I kinda wish technology was used more in some classes, but less in others. It honestly just depends, and from what I was told years ago, my grade and a few above me were supposed to carry laptops once we got into highschool, but of course, WCS wasn't going to fund that... So, it never happened. I think one day a class will actually be able to afford it, but at the time, we're all gonna be stuck using what we're given.

I believe technology is very useful to the schools for teaching. Especially to those who are visual/hands on people. All of my teachers use their technology to teach but it dosn't seem to effecting some of the students. They say it dosn't make learning the material any more interesting. Still technology is making the school work more easier to do.

  8. I think technology has it's benefits but it has many malfunctions. Not all students are good with computers and fancy schmancy calculators. And if students don't pay attention when teachers explain how to use things they become lost. I actually am starting to use technology in other classes like BAND there is a program called "smartmusic". It records you playing a peice of music for the computer and if you don't play it exactly right you get a failing grade! A majority of the time I have a 100 in band but as of right now I have a 50!!! It's so frustrating and stressful I want to throw the computer on the ground and smash it with my instrument. Technology is nothing compared to interaction with human beings. And humans are not perfect so technology shouldn't expect us to be. I think school should stay old school !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
